Discipline = Freedom

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

“Only the disciplined ones in life are free.  If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and passions.” – Eliud Kipchoge

It’s a paradox.  If you do whatever you want to do, you will run out of options and be forced to accept whatever you get – and that will not be much.

Do you know someone like that?

However, if you discipline yourself, you will have options.

Options = freedom.

You will be able to call the shots in your own life.

I like self-discipline – because if I discipline myself and hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else does, then I will never have to be disciplined by anyone else.  I don’t like to be disciplined.  I don’t like when people have to tell me I am doing it wrong or have done wrong and am subject to penalties – even if that penalty is just someone else knowing I’m a slacker who didn’t do their homework.

No way.  You don’t discipline me – I’ll do it myself.

I’m the boss of me.

My character and self-discipline keep it that way.

How about you?

Kipchoge! Legendary marathon runner. His mindset, self-discipline, and consistency are extraordinary. He ran a sub 2-hour marathon! We can all learn from him. I recommend the “Breaking 2” documentary (Prime) and “The long run, an inside view” mini doc (YouTube).

Intriguing reading this post. I often think of the paradox of self discipline = freedom. I nearly commented my thoughts re: this to you a couple of days ago. In my younger years seeing people young and free while I was working didn’t make me feel free. As I stride at an increasing rate toward financial freedom I see that my self discipline has led to greater personal freedom. Same with fitness. My sticking to my fitness goals through the winter are giving me the confidence for a 54 mile backpacking loop for my 54 birthday, which is a training trip for a 200 mile backpacking trip in Scotland this September.

Amen to all of the above! On the opposite side of the coin, everyone who is poorly disciplined will end up having their freedoms taken away. Think of all of those incarcerated. Their incarceration undoubtedly resulted from a lack of self-discipline, at least in the moment they committed the crime. This is where consistency is so important. Someone only has to let their self-discipline slip one time and it can lead to a lifetime of heartache.
