Interested? Be curious. Find out more.

Curiosity will have you looking into things and finding out how they work, or why they came about.
One thing leads to another, and one day you’re an expert on something or in a cool situation – all because you were curious and found out more.
What should you look into and find out more about?
I’m always curious of what others are doing in our network of brothers and sisters. It spawns competition within me! Curiosity keeps me up to date and in the know!
So often one hears that someone is “so smart.” Not true. They are “curious” and this curiosity drives them to explore new people, places and things with passion and increase their knowledge so they can make an even greater impact on the world.

Breaking the Law by doing nothing – part 2

At Think Daily, I hope to encourage people to think. Personal development is my specialty, but occasionally I will ask societal questions too, and encourage comments. Of course, in doing so I can excite the common narratives around both sides of an issue. I do not want Think Daily to be a place for political discourse, just to bring some aspect of question or thought into an issue.
When posing the idea that we can break a law by doing nothing, there were plenty of comments. I knew there were some examples that I didn’t think of that people wrote in the comments.
For example jury duty, or registering for the draft. Paying taxes or having car insurance is not one because you only have to do those things IF you make money or drive. I believe with the affordable care act you must have health insurance or face a penalty, but I am not an expert in such policies as I take little time to pay attention to them all.
Most laws are to prevent you from doing something wrong, which was my indirect point. Only a tiny fraction would have you run afoul of the law by doing absolutely nothing at all.
There was a lot of people commenting about the COVID vaccine. While I will not get into that because I love you all and have nothing to gain by doing so, we can see that over the course of history terrible diseases have plagued populations, and vaccines have saved countless lives. They may have even saved mine, but we don’t know about what didn’t happen to us.
We all must balance the benefits of freedom with the benefits of a responsive government.
Can you see both?
We must apply the correct philosophy in our thinking for various issues.
I agree that we should not be so legislated that we break the law by doing nothing, including jury duty and registering for the draft. I am not convinced that either one should be mandatory. Perhaps we could experiment with 6 jurors as is the custom in some other countries, so fewer would need to serve. Also, I don’t believe forcing people to fight for our country is right. We should use incentives, if and when the time comes. My point was that I believe we already have a questionable law or two. As you said, good laws prevent us from doing wrong. Just my thoughts.
good comments today
I am a new JunkLugger and have been reading your daily wisdom without fail. I am a republican. I’m prefacing what I’m going to say with it since you will understand. I feel everyone had right to choose to whether to get vaccine or not. But if we don’t get it we should be liable to pay for Damages to others or self if we don’t get it like car insurance. If we make this into a law lot of folks who aren’t getting vaccine will immediately get it. It’s just sad to see that we have lost more folks to this pandemic than the 1918 epidemic even after all the scientific advances. Just makes me sad. Anyways, thank you sir and have a wonderful weekend.

Raj
Thank you for encouraging civil discussion between intelligent adults. Keep the daily messages coming!
Right on brother!!
Thanks for keeping us all on our best behavior politically correct or not!

As always, I appreciate your insight and intelligent angle! I also appreciate that we all are part of this great network and we can talk things through with calmness. I’m my case, I really on my body and mind telling me what to do. I will do what’s best for me. That may mean I may not agree with decisions that our government makes for me. After all, they are human beings and have been proven many times to make mistakes too! Men and women learn from each other, it’s what we do in this world !
Larry I think we also need to think about balancing personal freedoms with community responsibilities. For example we put limits on freedom of speech by limiting limiting falsely yelling fire in a crowed theater….. or limiting our rights to bear arms to not include heat seeking missile launchers….nether individual rights nor community responsibilities can or should be absolute

The point of the journey, is NOT to arrive

Do your best, don’t let fear run you, and go after what you want.
Anything can happen.
Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that’s so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
Interesting thought…methinks you can arrive at the end of a journey, it’s what you learned along the way that is so important
Love Rush seen them every time they played in Buffalo!
Beyond the Lighted Stage a must see, if a Rush fan
Rush fan since exit stage left.
Neal certainly provided great and deep lyrics.
Rush is one of my favorite rock bands. My brother Steve and I had front row center tickets at the Tweeter Center in MA. He worked for Tweeter Etc. Neil Peart was the best drummer of all time!
Rush fan here. My first (second and third) concerts at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis 1983,84,85ish. Took my future wife to a show once and she claims she was the only female in attendance!
Rush Limbaugh, R.I.P. (Feb. 17, 2021). I liked his style, and was a fan of his radio program.
Saw Rush Easter Sunday evening, 1978(ish), Mom was not happy…
Still have All The World’s a Stage album, will have to give it a spin
Huge Rush fan here! Saw them countless times from the 80s up until they retired. Recently saw a Rush tribute band. “Lotus Land”. They did a well done job! RIP Neil, you are missed very much!
Absolutely have some Rush fans out here – I can vouch for 1 any way! I had the good fortune to see them live several times.
Your arrival point is just another step in your life
There’s always a new step to take
Rush has been my favorite band since I’ve been 12 years old I’ve seen them in concert at least 10 times and now I follow cover bands all over Buffalo
RUSH ! Loved their early music! Neil Peart was such a great lyricist, a true thinker! Amazing drummer too!
My older brother turned me on to them right around the time of their first album release. He saw them at the Cleveland Agora. It was a bar in Cleveland oh ,t hff at would get all sorts of talented bands to come play there. Tickets usually cost $1.01 as WMMS would promote these bands and they were 101.on the radio dial!
Thanks for you inspiration and all you do!!! I look forward to your daily thinking!

Show up ready to go!

This simple idea was brought to us from the comments section by Bill Whyte.
If you SHOW UP, and you are ready to go, you are ahead of most people.
Showing up ready, physically, emotionally and with the right attitude, is half the battle.
Many people don’t get that far.
What do you think?
I 100 percent agree!!
Everyone likes to dance after a victory, but the # of folks who do the work to train for that is astonishingly low.
Agreed. My morning is designed around priming me for productivity, success and growth. It took me some time to understand the power of preparation, what it means and takes. For me, the work starts way before I hit the office. I love my morning rituals and the confidence that comes with really being ready to tackle my day! Once primed, execution and decision making is easier.
Great post.
We often say to our kids — “half of life is just showing up”, and then if you can add “on time” and “prepared” to that, you’ve got it made!
Totally Agree!!
Totally agree….. Just showing up doesn’t get the job done.
I think that showing up ready to go is a learned trait and I am grateful for those who provided me with the lessons because passing it on can be a frustrating task.
True statement. The right attitude and frame of mind will carry over to prospective clients and to co-workers as well. Positivity breeds Positivity!
Success happens when opportunity meets preparedness. We have new opportunities everyday and if we come prepared we will have success!

Great headline Larry!
It’s not the challenge that you face that determines your character. It’s how you address it.
Barry Gordy. the founder of Motown Recording and Production Studios put it best. “Innovate or Stagnate”.
Looking from the view that we are all “artists” creating our lives, another version
“A writer—and, I believe, generally all persons—must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.”
— Jorge Luis Borges
Much appreciated Larry. I feel like it’s important to know where you came from so that you know where you’re going.

Ideas Matter

Too often we say we like a policy or something that is going on in the world depending on if it serves our interest or not.
Too seldom do we say “It’s not right” when it serves our interest.
For example, if someone shows up at your front door to sell goods at a deeply discounted price, we say “great”. That’s because it’s good for you. What if you knew that those goods were stolen from your neighbor the night before? That should change your mind, right?
What if a rival of yours was robbed? Your Mom’s house was robbed?
What if taxes went up, but you weren’t paying any anyway? Would you care? What if you were getting benefits, but your children would pay for them later? Someone else’s children?
We need principles that work in the world, and stop judging good or bad based solely on whether it serves our current immediate interest.
In order to develop a good philosophy, we need to learn (a lot) more about the world, history, and economics. We need to learn from multiple sources, not just ones who are looking to copy their own philosophy, sell something, or hold our attention by dispensing fear and drama. We need to be objective, and look at what has really worked and what has not.
Do you know enough to have a philosophy that works in the world?
Definitely agree. In order to make this truly successful, it is important to have fixed stars to navigate by so that the decisions can be made and subordinated to principles that truly impact the right things.
Hey Larry,
I wish more people would think this way. Then they wouldn’t have to worry about waking up in the morning and regret some of their choices.
Great reminder! I’m learning every day. Thank you!
As a Christian I look at things differently than a lot of other people and one of the universal characteristics of every person from the day they are born is that they are selfish. Our job as parents is to convert that selfish child into a self-less adult. Self-less doesn’t mean we don’t care for ourselves but that we put other’s needs ahead of our own. The reality is that you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want. (Zig Ziglar) It is also true that there is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit. (Ronald Reagan) If we were guided by the principles above then we would consider our actions differently.

"Affectionate Asskicker"

Having someone who we know cares about us, but still calls us on our crap and challenges us to be better is a good thing. You can’t pull anything on this person – and they know when you are making excuses and when you can do better – and they tell you the truth.
Who is your affectionate ass-kicker?
Even amongst employees, we are quick to label the person that doesn’t agree with us as “counter-cultural” or “not buying in”. Provided you are approachable, and they are only telling YOU what you don’t want to hear, they might well be your biggest asset.
10X message! Have a great day Larry!

Breaking the law by doing nothing.

Ideas matter. We say we live in a free society. We say we cherish our freedom.
We need laws to protect us from others violating our rights, property, and freedom.
So if I hurt someone or take their stuff, I am breaking the law and can be punished.
But what if we do nothing, and still violate the law? Is that free?
Can you think of examples of that?
Do you think that once the door is opened to force citizens to do things, that it can lead us down a bad road where leaders or a leader forces their vision of society on us?
(This has been tried many times before, and always with disastrous results.)
Sound off with the orange comment button, and see what others are saying.
Agreed.
Or force our employees to take an experimental jab.
You mean like opening our borders to let anyone come in illegally and seed our country with all kinds of unvetted people? By the thousands and ten thousands!! Not true you say. Didn’t hear that on the news? Well when the MSM and tech giants own the information flow, you would not know. That’s called suppression of information or censorship. Certainly not free speech. Those companies are collectively one voice owned by a handful of corporations. If you try frankspeech.com
Or LindellTV.com or stream Real America’s Voice, Gab.com, GETTR.com or other alternative FREE information sites, you might get a different point of view. Then you would be able to make a better informed decision. Just sayin’. It’s easier to lie to someone than to convince someone they have been lied to! IMHO
The vaccine there trying to force is wrong and a complete toxin to the body. Not my words but mayo clinics and Cleveland clinic heads words
Not registering for the draft, not attending school as a minor, not showig up for jury duty are other examples.
It is beyond important that we protect our freedom…Sad to see that it has become a necessity in this country.
Spot on Larry !!! Thank you for your wonderful words of wisdom and common sense each day!!!
If we could wake up so we don’t turn into Australia…that’d be great!
A clear sign of danger is when they invoke “for the greater good”. America is a society of individuals and individual freedom, not conformity.
In most states it is mandatory for drivers to have car insurance. That works pretty well when someone runs into you
It depends on what were asked to do. Fight for for our country, vaccination to protect the elderly, the people who got to where we are, attend basic education, pay taxes. Part of doing what is required of us by law is simply being a citizen. I have done and will do my part and that keeps me free.
A quote by John Stuart Mill
who delivered an 1867 inaugural address at the University of St. Andrews and stated: “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”
My sentiment made so succinct by this quote…no need for me to embellish
You are spot on Larry. People are trading our freedoms for what they believe is safety.
Unless you are sheltering in a cave with an overabundance of food and water and writing a manifesto on tablets, i.e., not even hunting for food, then you are doing “something”, which involves other people. The word Freedom in the Constitution does not mean what you and the Ayn Rand Institute have corrupted it to mean … the goal was a relinquishing of some individuality in order to perform a more perfect union, like defense and the roads that your companies make money from. If you are trying to vaguely refer to the vaccine, then again you are wrong because you can kill me by not taking the vaccine, and the ultimate libertarian politic is that “your right to swing your fist, ends at my nose”. Wake up and be part of society and government … would you prefer anarchy and war?
Freedom – like a women’s right to choose how to handle what happens to her own body. I agree – government should not be mandating that.
Amen. Strange things are afoot and its time we stand up and fight. I think the first time around it was for less reasons…. something about high taxes on tea or something if I recall. 😉
My Mom works in the Federal Government. She was forced to take the vaccine so that she could keep her job. If she wouldn’t have taken it. She would have lost her job and no pension
Larry, I agree that individual rights and freedoms are an essential part of our society and should be defended, but their are certain rights that apply to others that require our own opinions to take a back seat. Vaccines have improved our society and almost eradicated certain ailments that used to impact not only our individual lives but those around us. The right for a person to role the dice with their own health is acceptable provided they do not become the weapon in which others may lose the battle because of the initial choice…… I personally chose to get vaccinated twice to protect myself as well as my family , friends and co-workers. I also agree that those that chose to skip the jab cannot board a plane, train or go to a target rich environment like a sporting event as their choice should not affect others well being. In an era of covid it seems logical as well that Healthcare workers who are not vaccinated cannot report for work since their choice should not put the sick and elderly in a greater risk for complications due to covid. I also agree that people need to have a drivers license, insurrance and be sober when the get behind the wheel and cross paths with other people on the road. The Greater good is a valid reason in my opinion.
The vaccine only helps the person who took it from POSSIBLY not getting too sick. It does not prevent you from not giving it to others. Getting more than one is ridiculous. But mark these words, once they can scare you into doing this there will be no stopping them. The fear of dying has motivated them to see just how far they can go. Open your eyes people.
Well Larry, I expected this would incite a firestorm of comments! It’s really sad how divided this country has become over the vaccine (and other social issues). The way I feel about it is like the Bible says, “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return;” (Luke 12:48b) The same holds true for our freedoms. Our nation was founded on individual freedom but along with that was expected individual responsibility. For many years individual responsibility has been diminished to where the majority of society now doesn’t feel that they must be responsible for many/any of their actions. Without strong individual responsibility our freedoms will continue to be taken in order to try to maintain a semblance of orderly society. It’s a real sad state of affairs!

It doesn’t matter how old you are or what shape you are in now.
Plan to be healthy in the future – now is the time, not then.
It’s never too late to start, today can be the day you make a change that improves the rest of your life.
Already did!

Great picture Larry. When I start again it is always in the pool doing laps. You do what you know.
