The Pursuit

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

“It turns out that the process of working toward a goal, participating in a valued and challenging activity, is as important to well-being as its attainment.” – Sonja Lyubomirsky

When I have a project or a goal I am actively engaged in working toward, I am happy. When it is completed/achieved, I am happier – for a very short time. Then, when there is no active pursuit anymore, I am a bit lost. I have nothing to engage with. Nothing to rally my talent and resources behind.

Happy people have projects and goals.

What are you in active pursuit of?

Learning to bake! I bought fresh milled flour, where the flavor and apparently nutrition differences are huge. I’m still on pancakes, though… So I guess I’m not technically baking yet, but I have an irrational fear of my oven exploding, so I’m trying to build up to actually using it!! Also, the biggest change for me, reading more often. I bought a cheap refurbished Kindle and it’s made reading so much easier (and lighter) for me — I also love searching word definitions, but using my phone turned it into a distraction, whereas it’s streamlined on a Kindle. Wishing I made the switch a lot earlier.
