What is your primary driver, need or want?
Four differences between needers and wanters –
1) Needing is extrinsically motivated, where wanting is internally motivated.
2) Needing is security driven. Wanting is freedom driven.
3) Needing is scarcity minded. Wanting is abundance minded.
4) Needing is reactive. Wanting is creative.
What drives you? Need? Or want?
Need and want both drive me. Because the need is something I have to have in order to keep learning in order to be better and succeed in my daily life so I can try to achieve an important goal. The want on the other hand for me is that whatever I do I want it to be enjoyable or preferable, so I don’t end up disliking it.
I feel like you need both in order to have that motivation and creativity. I think the question lots of people have, is what I’m trying to do or get started, is it what I’m meant to do? So how does someone know if the business they are trying to start is what they are supposed to be doing?
Wow, what a great distinction. After giving it some thought, needs-driven action has caused the most problems in my business. Whether it was adding unnecessary stress and tension to situations, taking on clients I shouldn’t have, or letting my standards slip instead of focusing on the right inputs and letting the outputs take care of themselves.
I’ve done my best when I want to do well but not attached to the outcome.
Thank you for these clarifications. They will make a difference for me.
Word tyrant here: Want is ‘the lack of’ what you mean is ‘desire’ where you use want, and want where you use need.
I think we are all “needers” and “wanters” at different times. When we are younger we work more out of the need to work. If we do really well then we will move from needing as much and into doing the things we want to do. Wanting are those things that we haven’t done yet but that we desire/intend/plan to do. When we move beyond our needs and focus on what we want then we can be truly creative and compound our accomplishments.
I think want ranks first for me, then if the want does not provide shelter food and water it can turn to a need real quick and cause you to jump into whatever can provide these needs. But I think want to do for the good and make money is in all of us!
