Talking yourself into a not so good idea

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I’ve been there.

You have an idea that’s a little out there.  It’s novel and kind of exciting.  You know there are significant problems with it, but you focus on what excites you.

You start talking yourself into it.  Your self-talk builds up the benefits and downplays the pitfalls.  You become kind of obsessed with it for a bit.  Thought precedes action.

You go for it.

The exciting part is there, for a short while.  After that, you have to live with the bad part of your decision – for a long time.

Doh!

It wasn’t worth it.  Bad move.  What was I thinking?

Can I take that one back?

Life is constructed from a hundred thousand decisions.  Get the bigger ones right.
