Old beliefs die hard

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Our beliefs do more to shape our lives than anything else. What we believe to be true…what we expect to happen…what we believe about ourselves.

To change our lives, we must change these beliefs. But the old ones fight to live; they don’t want to surrender and go away – they are “Beliefs” after all and must be true. But they are not true – they are just ideas we accepted long ago as permanent realities – and that was our mistake.

Nothing is real unless we say it is real. Nothing is true unless we say it is true. Nothing is permanent unless we say it is permanent. We need to go back and question what we think is true – “Why do we believe that?”  “What happened?” “What decision did we make?” “Looking back, was it really a valid decision?”

Let’s soften these old beliefs by questioning them. Then, if we want to make a new decision, create a new belief that overrides the old one, and throw the old one out.

With new beliefs about how we are and how the world is, we will think new thoughts and take new and different actions – and our world will change for us.

New thoughts and different actions will take us to new places and help us achieve different results. We can choose what to believe and do; so that the new places and results are better than we have today.
