A new subscriber recently signed up for Think Daily named Tim Donahue. He’s a student at Delhi University in New York. Someone there must have referred a bunch of students because many signed up one day. (more please!) We ask “who referred you?” and he wrote, “I did this against my will.” I loved it!
Sometimes we need others to help us get out of our normal routine, expose us to new things, and challenge our beliefs. That’s what education is all about.
The more we “lock in” our beliefs, our self-image, our habits and patterns of thinking and doing, the less we can learn and move forward. We just go around finding people who think and act like us, and thinking or arguing with everyone else about how they are wrong.
Thank you, Tim, for being willing to try something new. Think Daily is about being the best version of you. It’s about personal performance and development, no matter what you are trying to be. You’ll be exposed to ideas that ring mostly true to most people on most days, and stimulates your thinking about your favorite subject and the one you can control – you!
A big shout out to Delhi University. Here’s a challenge – let’s see how many students we can get to subscribe to Think Daily THIS WEEK! I’m going out on a limb here in that I don’t know a soul there personally, but I trust kindred spirits will make it happen! We’ll give a report of the results!

Feeling "trapped"

If you feel trapped, you haven’t controlled your own life. You are suffering the chains of conformity.
Ask “where am I allowing others to control me that is not true to who I really am or what I really want?”
Why are you allowing this? Is what you gain worth the price?
Would a minute of defiance break the chains and yield your freedom?
Are you brave enough (yet)?
You walk into traps . That’s it bottom line. .

Tolerant of the Intolerant

Every once in a while I may try to tackle a contentious subject. I’m not a political animal, but I am an idea and principle one. Here we go – ready?
I recently read a book called “Skin in the Game” where the author poses many ideas and points out many obvious and fascinating issues at work in our world. One of the ideas that grabbed me was about tolerance.
America is a tolerant place. We are supposed to tolerate different religions, ideas, etc. Where the problem comes in that allows a “radical minority” to change America, is tolerating the intolerant. Let me pick a few examples at the risk of you thinking this post is about those examples.
If most of us want the American flag (or prayer) in the classroom, and a small vocal minority comes along and says they don’t, and they are intolerant (and offended) and we cater to them by removing the flag and prayer, then the intolerant have won in changing the tolerant majority. But if tolerance is what we expect in America, shouldn’t the minority be tolerant of the majority?
I saw transgender bathrooms in the SanDiego airport. Isn’t that how that happened? We were tolerant of the intolerant.
There are major religions in the world where if a member of that religion marries a member of a different religion, the new mate MUST convert to their religion and the children must be that religion as well. Over the decades you can see tolerant religions being overrun by the intolerant.
Tolerance is an important part of a free society. But it has to go both ways. If we are tolerant of the intolerant, then the intolerant take over and we have lost tolerance – right?
Never heard it said better! Thanks Larry
This is a hot topic and you have articulated your thoughts well. I only wish this is how it worked . It seems to me that most people who claim to be tolerant (or who at least those who proclaim it the loudest) are tolerant of everything, except for that with which they personally disagree.
Very Well said !!
This is so true….my thoughts exactly!
Amen!
Very well put!!
Finally, someone has made it simple to understand. Very well put!!
Well delicately said! We have grown quite colorful as a tolorant country just in the last decade alone and now we tolerantly walk on egg shells about these subjects. Our great grandfathers would be shocked! My kids are in a school where they are not as subject to the as tolerant schools and we defend traditions such as the pledge allegiance to start the day. Someone needs to say it. Thanks for the share.
God bless America!
I believe you just did what is called hitting the nail on the head…. How can people be so blind?…… Larry Janesky for president!
Your last sentence sum it up – by giving in to the radicals, we allow ourselves to become weakened and marginalized.
. If we are tolerant of the intolerant, then the intolerant take over and we have lost tolerance – right?
This sentence sums it up: If we are tolerant of the intolerant, then the intolerant take over and we have lost tolerance – right?
By giving in we allow the radical small groups to control and marginalize the timid majority.
Larry,
I hope you are well, it has been too long. I look forward to your blogs everyday, and appreciate everything you share. I rarely leave a comment, but this one was deserves the appreciation. I appreciate men (and women) who have the willingness to say what they think and not be scared to do so. I could not agree with you more and appreciate your example and leadership.
You hit the nail right on the head!
Well said Larry,…. when the intolerant minority wins,….. we ALL lose… chipping away at the freedoms the tolerant majority so cherishes….
Very deep thought. I see where you are coming from and my first reaction is to agree. Now I am thinking about how that applies to many situations in the world and what is my part in that process. Thanks!
Seems so simple, right?
This sentence struck me: “But if tolerance is what we expect in America, shouldn’t the minority be tolerant of the majority?”
Doesn’t the majority need to be tolerant of the minority too? Also, how are we measuring this “majority” anyway – is it the people who are simply the loudest or are we taking legitimate polls to define what the majority and minority is?
I see your point – but it goes both ways. Just because a majority wants something doesn’t mean it’s the right choice (i.e. slavery) That’s where compromise comes in – a topic you should have addressed in this piece as it’s a crucial point of friction when tolerance is in question. Time passes, things change, the minority today will not be the minority of tomorrow. I think there is a larger gray area to discuss that you do not address in this piece.
We learn at a young age that the squeakiest wheels get greased.
Unfortunately not always fair to the others.
Absolutely agree.
It is absolutely happening. When will it stop?
Larry – well said. Would like to continue this conversation about how to stop this madness. How can we work together to stop this process of the minority controlling the majority? Thank you for taking a respectful stand!
Our country started because a few men ( the minority) had the courage to no longer tolerate the current system . It worked and the ideals expanded and our country prospered -we had rules that made sense and people generally abided by those rules – the play book didn’t change dramatically every year – but we reached a tipping point – too many people and too many opinions and the belief that we can fight for our rights no matter how stupid those rights might be – A legal system that is accepting of nonsense lawsuits – why because we have the right … a political system that has gotten too big , one that can no longer realistically represent the voice of the majority -why because there is no majority. A system that is run by special interest that relies on crying and whining to gain popularity (votes ) – the system needs problems so political candidates can present solutions to win elections. Problems like transgender rights are low hanging fruit & easy targets that’s why these nonsense issues get attention –
who’s to say what’s a real problem vs an imaginary problem though ?
When our founding fathers rallied for support they gained it because others believed in the cause – no one gave them privledge out of fear of some back lash – they grew from a minority into a majority organically . I think that’s the difference – they weren’t given special rights – they earned those rights
GOD Bless America
Excellent post! Couldn’t agree more!
Only wish more people had the opportunity to really think about that sentence , maybe we would have civility.
This is the real reason I read Think Daily. It makes me think of things differently. It has always upset me that a small minority changes policy for everyone. One guy puts a worthless bomb in his shoe and every single person has to take their shoes off at the airport.
Thanks for tackling this issue.

Warrior of the Light

“Every warrior of the light has been afraid to go into battle. Every warrior of the light has, at some time in the past, lied or betrayed someone. Every warrior of the light has trodden a path that was not his. Every warrior of the light has suffered for the most trivial of reasons. Every warrior of the light has thought in the past, that he was not a warrior of the light. Every warrior of the light has failed in his spiritual duties. Every warrior of the light has said yes when he wanted to say no. Every warrior of the light has hurt someone he loved. That is why he is a warrior of the light – because he has been through all this and he has never lost hope of being better than he is.” – Paulo Coelho, Warrior of the Light
Excellent material….Thank you!
This quote expresses in words a lifetime of personal sentiments…great share, thank you!

Reflections of a 54 year old

I turned 54 a few days ago. It’s not a “big birthday,” but I took time to reflect on my life, what I have learned, and how I feel.
1) Relationships are most important. In the end, that’s all we’ve got, and that’s all we really need. Love in all its dimensions is central.
2) Be kind. Make people feel good about themselves. If people feel good because of your presence, they will want to be around you. If not, they won’t.
3) I feel good about my health and physical fitness. You can be active and fit as you get older, but it takes work. If you embrace this work and learn to love it, it makes it easier. Get around other people who love it too – a community at the gym or good friends who are active. My mind and muscles are cooperating, but my knees and some tendons are protesting.
4) Pay attention to your body. When you notice something odd, get checked out early. I had a little skin cancer on my face four years ago. You have to find these things early. Don’t be a pessimist, but don’t ignore stuff either. Many times it’s nothing, but one time it’s something.
5) When you are young, you have health and energy, but not much experience, less money, and you may think you know much. Keep learning. Stay open. Hold your beliefs loosely so new ideas may get in. As you mature, you realize some of the things you professed to were not exactly true for everyone or for all times.
6) At my age, I feel I have much to give and much to do. The confluence of knowledge, experience, people I know and resources creates an abundant world for those who are inclined to be and give their best.
7) Stay true to who you really are. More than ever, I know why I am here. It can take a long time and experiments to really figure it out. Going down the wrong path and feeling uncomfortable is part of understanding this.
8) I hope to be here a very long time and will do what I can to make it so. But if that is not in the cards, I know that I did my best and made the most of what I was given, and that’s ok too.
An entire book on how to have a great life, on a single page.
Great stuff!
Thank You
Happy Belated Birthday ?
Hi Larry,
Happy Birthday! Great list! Add to 4, see your Primary Care Physician annually after age 50. I had Two serious medical conditions diagnosed at those checkups which were 100% cured with surgeries. There are some diseases that have no symptoms for people in good physical condition (like you).
Regards Chuck
Happy belated birthday Larry. I too share your age and most of your reflections. Thanks for bing an inspiration to me and many others. You truly lead by example.
Larry, well stated. Many blessings . You’re a good man.
So very true Larry…

Good morning Larry! That is a great reflection for this morning! Thanks for sharing your thoughts as usual.
Larry, I got to say I love your outlook on life. By the way I like that picture also! Lol
Happy Belated Birthday Larry. I love all of those, #2 and #4 are my favorites. Thank you for sharing!!!
Happy Birthday! I am 53 and everything you wrote was very accurate. It is nice to know that other people your age feel like they still have so much to give. One problem I have been dealing with since I entered my 50’s is age discrimination. I am not sure if this happens to men and woman but I can only speak for myself. I have worked my whole life in big jobs. Didn’t take time off to raise my daughter, she went straight to daycare and now I couldn’t get a marketing job if I paid someone. I’m too old….since everything is digital and I have been trained and know how to market using digital advertising, (besides having a 17 year old daughter keeping me up to speed.) I was literally told that I would have had to grow up in the digital world. So I no longer work in the industry I loved….I won’t even care if they paid me a lower salary. But they want 20 somethings straight out of college……I guess that is how I became the General Manager of the Palace Theatre at 26 and the Director of MK at the NH Coliseum at 29….I have expected that I just work now to make a living and no longer to strengthen my career. I would be curious to know your thoughts on this since we are basically the same age and you hire a lot of people. Are most of the people you hire in their 20’s? Would you hire me?
happy birthday and thank for the wisdom, Larry!
Thank you for sharing really loved everything I read and Happy belated Birthday Larry

When another day goes by, is death another day closer for you? That depends on what you did that day – right?
What are you doing today to take care of your mind and body?
Absolutely agree and make a real effort to live a healthy life style. Started the day with meditation/prayer and 30 minutes of exercise. A good start anyway!

How to be healthier, more creative, productive and fit.

Sleep. It’s highly underrated.
Get enough. Get more.
I totally agree ~ but one of the medications I’m on interrupts my sleep at night. As someone who works at home and is a caregiver I try to get a nap in the afternoon so I can function for the rest of the day. I only feel a little guilty about it. : )
How true! Much work is done by your brain while you sleep. During the first past of your sleep, your brain is cleaning and sorting, but it is the last few hours when memories are stored. Teens often get the least sleep, and they miss this vital part.
Many advocates say school should start much later for them. 7:00 or 7:30 start times can negatively impact school performance.
Hello Larry, a study was just published today that studied over 1-million people and it showed that between 6 and 8- hours is the optimum hours a person should sleep per day. when you get more or less sleep per day your chances of heart disease goes up 33%
