Exercise = Weights + Cardio + Rest

To live well and long we need a good strong body, because if the body dies, it doesn’t matter how good your mind was. The body was made for a different time. A time when we needed to do much more physical things than most of us who have white collar jobs do now. The body doesn’t do very well sitting and being sedendary.
So we must exercise. What does that mean exactly? Resistance training – lifting heavy things and putting them down. Use different parts of your body. You don’t have to kill yourself. Do what is work but not weight that will hurt you for your fitness level.
But that’s not all. This alone won’t necessarily get our heart rate up. So we need to do that too. Cardio – run or bike or something that will get your heart rate up and have you sweating and breathing for 20 minutes or more three times a week.
Lastly, we need rest. Don’t work out every day. Let your body rebuild and respond to what you are asking of it. If you exercise right, you get stronger on rest days.
If you find a hobby or sport or activity you love that fits the weight lifting requirement or the cardio requirement that’s great. I have property and like to go into the woods with a chainsaw. That’s a great workout and I am doing something productive. Some people have jobs that are workouts. Some people play soccer or tennis or basketball.
Stay healthy and live longer. The time to think about it is now and every day, not at a premature end.

Health = Diet + Exercise + Sleep
That’s the formula. How would you say you are doing?
Do you eat right? I do fairly well. I don’t eat much bread or sugar, but I can always do better. I don’t have snacks in the house. Eating better while traveling is something I need to work on.
Do you exercise? I do good here, but cardio has been lacking some since I had my knee replaced. I am doing better at avoiding injury while exercising.
Do you sleep enough? I could go to sleep earlier. Eating earlier will help. I do catch up on sleep when I’m behind. Being behind on sleep is the number one thing that dings my performance. I can do better in getting enough sleep while traveling. I manage my energy with food and get home from trips exhausted.
Health = Diet + Exercise + Sleep
If we can do well in these three areas, we will feel better, do better and avoid many ailments and diseases.
Thank you for this sound advice and admonition!
Check with Lisa for eating while traveling. She travels in her job and always takes her own vegan food, or shops wisely nearby.
I’ve definitely flipped my diet on its head over the last few years. From soda and fast food to water and fresh fruit and veggies, with the occasional sweets or pizza when I’m feeling accomplished or in need of a pick-me-up. No alcohol or cigarettes for almost 3 years, I can now run for 10-15 miles on my elliptical while breathing calmly through my nose without issue.
I don’t think I’ve had a good night’s sleep in 20 years, haha. For such a huge and important part of our lives, I really need to try and find out why.

Today I’m grateful for you and Marc, for buying Bill out.
Good Morning Larry! I like this, its very straightforward and simple but makes 100% sense. I need to check my work, because I’m not getting the same results.
No more grateful than I am for you Larry… thank you
“The struggle ends when gratitude begins.” ―Neale Donald Walsch
I would say this book forgot the most important ingredient to happiness – knowing and loving God. Without that, the other 3 are meaningless.
I think in one of your blogs a couple years ago you said “health before wealth”. Good advice.

What is a great movie for me to watch?

I like inspirational movies. I like a great story. I like to be moved emotionally.
A great love story is good. A war movie with an inspirational story is great. I don’t watch too many movies, and I don’t like to waste two hours. What movies that fit this bill do you recommend? Share and tell us.
Here are some of my favorites of all time –
Braveheart, 42, Seven Years a Slave, Gettysburg, Schindlers List.
The Pursuit of Happyness is an amazing movie. Lends itself to what we do regarding work ethic and commitment. Very emotional.
Gone with the wind, Saving Private Ryan,
Remember The Titians
Rudy
Free Solo achievement at its best.
Harriet – Is a 2019 movie about Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and the amazing bravery and faith she displayed in returning time and again to the South to free many more enslaved Americans.
Cinderella Man – (2005) A great movie that is based on a true story of a depression era boxer who overcomes tremendous adversity to return to the ring and keep his family together.
Although not war or love movies totally, these fit the bill for inspiration and moving me emotionally.
Big Fish

I would recommend you to watch Free State of Jones and The Siege of Jadotville. Both movies can be found on Netflix.
I love “the Greatest Show on earth” it’s a love story, an action story, with a heart tugging ending. It’s also has great scenes from when the circus WAS the greatest show on earth! Great cast Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart, Cornel Wilde, Betty Hutton and Dorothy Lamour
Ok you should watch “A River Runs Through It” a Brad Pitt movie. The best part is at the end and what he says while fly fishing alone. You will need to listen to the ending several times .
Shawshank Redemption
Facing the Giants

The Last Samaurai
Recently released, JoJo Rabbit. WWII movie about a boy in the Hitler youth and his imaginary friend. Hilarious, poignant, sad, thoughtful.

Some of my favorites
Its a wonderful life, Dances with wolves, The Yearling, The Cowboys, Gone with the wind, The good the bad and the ugly.
I hate to cheat; not follow the rules, but I have to recommend “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”. No, it’s not a movie yet; maybe it will be someday. It’s a book that reads so well, when you’re finished you’ll swear to God it was a movie! A beautiful love story wrapped in the most challenging of circumstances.

Rudy
Never quit. Always believe in yourself.
The upside
Founder
Not a movie but documentaries series which I love because you can learn from successful people. One is the imagineering story on Disney plus. The last dance on Netflix is Michael Jordan’s story. He was the ultimate competitor and he never quit.

Seven Days in Utopia, Invincible, Rudy, Remember the Titans
Into the Dust one, two and three.
Darkest Hour

How good of a parent you are depends on how your kids turn out.
This is not necessarily related to how good of a parent you wanted to be or how much effort you put in.
You can try really hard to be a great parent but raise kids who are not very strong, resilient, confident or whatever else.
Parenting is a skill like any other, and not automatically known because you have a child.
It can be learned. Study up!
My Priest told me many years ago, when I was raising my two boys…”It’s not how your children behave in your home, it is how they behave outside of your home.”
Grateful for God, Family, & health

Stupid Hurts

If you’re going to be stupid, you better be tough.
Work hard and be tough anyway, but why make it harder on yourself?
Think it through.
We all do stupid things that hurt, Afterwards, when we think about it and we realize we could’ve done it differently with a different outcome. I fell down a set of stairs (all the way to the bottom) yesterday while working at my daughters house because I left an air hose on her steps, stupid right! I got up in a hurry, my daughter said, “dad, you ok?, then she said, dad, you’re tough! Of course I didn’t let her know it hurt! 🙂

Feeling out of control is a major part of being unhappy.
Feeling in control is a major part of being happy.
Are you reacting to what happens or making things that you want happen?
When we can step back, listen and then respond to any given situation, we will gain the wisdom needed to overcome every obstacle and fight every battle. It is important to see what is happening, evaluate the outcome you want and then choose your course of action carefully.
Good Morning Larry!
I’ve spent way too much time reacting to life, I’m definitely trying to consciously respond now. Like all things in life, it’s an effort! But it’s a worthwhile one. I want to be happy, so I need to make it so.

You’re never going to know if you enjoy something if you never try it. I never thought I’d enjoy cardio until I ran my first 10 miles. Now, I’m trying to fit at least one in every day! Every so often on a weekend, I’ll run as much as I can for the pure exhilaration that is finding out how far I can go. Now I’ve been lifting some weights to help the cause! No one can stop me but myself!
