Modern life has become very convenient, and our bodies are paying the bill.
We buy devices to save a bit of effort. We hire people to do lots of things for us.
People may wonder why I cut trees and do the maintenance chores I do if I can hire someone to do it.
The answer is I’d rather get exercise doing real work than going to the gym and lifting weights. I do that too, but I’d rather lift real things in real situations that require all kinds of movement, and get the satisfaction of having accomplished something. I also get to be creative and keep my skills up.
At times I love what I am doing. Cutting up a dead tree that fell in the woods… At times I realize I am doing it for no other reasons than to stay healthy and be physically strong. It’s also good for me mentally.
Do I like to take an escalator or sit in a comfy chair while someone else is mowing the lawn? Sure. But I realize what a life of physical ease can do to me, and I keep that away with physical work, or workout.
I’m a bigger guy, but I can’t imagine how much bigger I’d be if I didn’t do what I do physically. I run a Stihl 056 Farm Boss chainsaw a lot cutting up dead trees. I work all the time trying to keep in shape. For the most part I eat healthy, but my genetics make me a “chunky guy”. My goal is to always be better physically than most people in my age group. I feel like I’m succeeding ! I’m fight that old man from entering the “conversation “.
A body in motion stays in motion. Flexibility becomes the key factor as we age to avoid the stiffness and stooped over posture.
I often feel guilty because I miss many workouts because I’m push cutting my lawn, do all my yard work, remodel or maintain rooms or outside of my house. I bike ride about 3 times per week totaling around 75-100 miles per week, but that’s just for fun. I guess I better get to it before the old man gets too far.
Great one. I do the same thing working out in the yard all the time, great exercise, good for the mind too. Thank you!
