Turn irritation into invention

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Many good ideas begin with “There has to be a better way”.

Frustration can become useful information.  Instead of complaining about an inconvenience or problem, study it.

Years ago I went to a customer’s house, and their sump pump was running, but the discharge pipe was frozen outside.  It was a common problem in our industry and seemingly no solution.  I thought about it.  I got some thin plastic sheeting and a heat gun and heated it up and began making shapes.  I used a hot knife to cut holes in a pattern.  I tried it to see how it worked.  Then I made another prototype.  Then another.  I invented the solution and we have used it for 25 years on maybe 500,000 houses.  It’s called an IceGuard.  It has saved countless damage, expense and trouble.  Nobody has flooded because of freezing discharge lines since.
