I don’t watch TV at all. I don’t watch movies a lot, or at least not as much as I used to. But I have watched three movies in the last two weeks (it is nearly winter after all) and all three were my kind of movies.
I am a softie, so wiping tears from my eyes is when you know I think it’s a good movie. I love a great story. Many great stories are good vs. evil with a love story woven in. If I can learn something, it’s even better. When I watch a bad movie, I feel like I wasted my time, and I want that time back. I kinda get soured on movies and won’t watch another one for a while.
One time, I asked you all for great movies that you think I would like, and I wrote them all down. Then I went online and found a list of “Best Picture” award winners for each year. That’s a great list!
From this list, Marie and I recently watched “Harriet”, about Harriet Tubman. What a movie!
I loved the “Wicked” movies (and the play).
My friend gave me a DVD a while back called “The Sound of Freedom”. This movie is very heavy. It is based on a true story about child trafficking. It is not entertainment, but a documentary shining a light on this terrible thing.
Do you have any recommendations for “Moving Pictures” for me/us? Write them in the comments!
Nefarious
This time of year, a movie with a timeless message,
It’s A Wonderful Life….
Hacksaw Ridge – Good triumphs!
I just watched an historical miniseries John Adams focused on what decisions were made that created America. So much of the same struggles are still happening.
180 Degrees South-Conquerers of the Useless is a favorite documentary of mine!
You can’t go wrong with the movies from the 40s, 50s and even 60s. Especially at Christmas: A Christmas Carol with Alister Simms, Miracle on 34th Street with Natalie Wood, Christmas in CT, several others. Other than Christmas movies I would recommend any from this era for entertainment; the acting is fabulous, the stories are fabulous. Even some of the Hallmark movies from 10 and 15 years ago are pretty good. I generally don’t like anything contemporary, and then if there’s a book- I’ve read it and the movies disappoints!
I love movies based in real stories. This is a good one.
“A Million Miles Away”
Braveheart
Patriot
All with the leading actor, Mel Gibson
I too shed a tear when I watch these as well
Miracle- The story of the U.S hockey team. Great movie on teamwork and leadership.
Ford v Ferrari! Great story. Great action. Great characters. 10/10 one of my favorite movies ever! Watch it as big and as loud as possible 🙂
Kind of a long list but had several to pick from. The Kingdom, Kingdom of Heaven, Taking Chance, Prisoners, Man on Fire. All very solid movies and all different genres.
One of my favorite movies of all time is Tombstone. It stars so many of the great actors and actresses. It’s a good one! It’s one of the most quoted movies ever. You won’t get any smarter watching it, it’s just a good movie.
Whiplash, The Wolf of Wall Street, There Will Be Blood, Top Gun: Maverick, Gran Torino, Ford v Ferrari.
Always – remake of a 1940’s movie called “A Man Named Joe.” Great cast – love story with a message, and Audrey Hepburn’s last film
On Any Sunday changed my life & as a kid, I pretty much watched that one weekly.
Larry, my wife and I love the movie, “About time” it is a great live story. We watch it once every year on Valentines day. It is inspirational and reminds us to appreciate the beauty of every day life.
I watched Sound of freedom in the cinema a Few years ago..tough movie
My favorite and special one definitely IS Gattaca. Every time when I feel down or sad I watch this movie here in Spain to get more inspiration. Its sooo powerful and if you are fighter or someone who is striving to achieve their dreams this your movie. Also the soundtrack is Magic.
Abrazo, Larry
I don’t watch many movies either, but last night we watched “A Man Called Otto”. It had a great story line and was very touching.
The Shack and War Room and The Forge and Discarded Things. We share the same taste and thoughts in movie-watching. I could go on and on with this list!
You need to try the two main movies about freedom. If you have a heart in your chest (which I know you do) and a love for America (which I also know you do) you will love these two recommendations.
Braveheart & the Patriot. Both have Mel Gibson as the main charter. I heavy=ily recommend them. The best movies to exist by far. I don’t watch a lot of tv / movies but for what it’s worth, you will not be wasting your time on these.
Con Air and The Rock with Nicolas Cage. Two of my favorite movies of all time!
I’m a big fan of movies that tell stories of courage, and grit, and tenacity. As a former military guy, some of my favorites are Hacksaw Ridge, Blackhawk Down, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, We Were Soldiers, 12 Strong, and 13 Hours. It’s impossible to watch those films without being moved by the incredible bravery of our troops over the generations.
Several come to mind:
The Family Man (Nicolas Cage, Tea Leone)
The Kid (Bruce Willis)
Waking Ned Devine (no big names, but great cast & story)
“The Illusionist” by Sylvain Chomet. It reflects a father-daughter like relationship of a little girl who is convinced that a magician is doing real magic. The script was written by Jacques Tati, a legend in the French movie industry, but animated by Chomet, one of the most expressive animators of our time right now. There’s no actual dialogue – just a very moving story that’s artfully done from start to finish.
“Slavery in the Name of Progress | A Wake-Up Call by Martin Scorsese”. Free to watch on YouTube. This is essentially a documentary based on Ronald Wright’s amazing book: A Short History of Progress.
The Shawshank Redemption – one of the best ever!
Angel studios, David.
Wolf of Wallstreet is a great movie, Leo does a great job depicting Jordan. Has some great takeaways and many laughs.
I like movies with about courage, sacrifice, loyalty, and honor. Also the consequences of a lack of these virtues. These movies must have a compelling story with good acting and directing. Most of my favorites are character-driven. These include movies like The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (194_), The Last of the Mohicans (199_), and Ride the High Country (196_). Classics like Citizen Kane and Casablanca are also on my list. If you like a good comedy, try 50 First Dates (2004). As for YouTube channels, Itchy Boots rocks!
“Train Dreams” on Netflix, “Casablanca”, “Silkwood”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Rudy”.
