Never ask an encyclopedia salesman if you need an encyclopedia.

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Are there conflicts of interest all over the place that we don’t consider?

Often on the most important issues of our lives we easily take the advice of highly educated, highly paid, highly esteemed professionals.

That’s not always a good idea.

Think. Read. Ask more questions.  Research.  Look at the obvious.  Talk to more people.  Consider alternate opinions.

Then decide.

A friend and fellow real estate agent posted online yesterday, “Asking a real estate agent if it’s a good time to buy or sell is probably not the best idea.”

We have to be careful with this one. We want people to ask our business if they should buy something and we want to sell it to them, but in my case, only if they truly want it or need it. I don’t want them having buyer’s remorse and so I will be careful advising someone to buy something if it doesn’t fix their problem and/or make them happy. A good business will advise you to do something because it’s good for you, not just because it’s good for them.
