Emotional leader, emotional players

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

People are not logical most of the time.  And you, as a leader, are a person.

Pay attention to how YOU are processing events and how you are coming across to others.

No matter what you are doing or trying to get your team to do, you have to get them to feel good about it against what they value, and how they are feeling.

You are emotional.  Others are emotional.

Pay attention.

Sage advice! I have had to check myself a couple times recently on this. So critical.

Emotional is also not a bad thing, because all emotions are not bad. An emotional leader will have much greater success with his team so long as he is exhibiting the right kinds of emotions. We need to be enthusiastic about our work, we need to be upbeat and confident that we will achieve a good outcome, we need to be grateful for all of the effort that is put in, even if the results aren’t ideal. We need to have sympathy and compassion towards others and be understanding about what they might be going through. Did I mention we need to be grateful? I believe gratefulness is probably the single most important motivator of the team. No one wants to work if they aren’t appreciated. Almost everyone will work better if they are better appreciated. Follow the Golden Rule, treat others the way you would want to be treated!
