Micro Cultures

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Yesterday I sent an incomplete message – I apologize.  I was out of the country for nearly a week and it got through.  Funny though, most people understood what I meant with just a few words.

Your company doesn’t have one culture unless it is small and everyone works together.  When departments or teams are in different buildings, different floors or areas of the same building, and have different managers, they will have different cultures.  This makes sense.  Culture is influenced by environment, communication, co-workers, managers, and the work itself.

How could the shipping department lead by Dave on the first floor have the same culture as customer service lead by Mary on the second floor?  There are many ways to influence the culture, but it will start with the managers understanding that culture is what’s left when they leave the building, and their desire to influence it positively.
