"Experience Breeds Stupidity"

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I guess it’s Kathy Richardson week here at Think Daily for Businesspeople. This is the fourth one in a row inspired by a pithy Kathy comment – all blasted out in real conversation in 25 seconds.

What she meant is that some leaders have been doing stuff for so long that they get locked in a rut, thinking they know it all. Experience is a great way to learn. In fact, being book smart counts for little. You have to try things for yourself to really learn.

But I’ll add this formula: Wisdom = Knowledge + Experience + Reflection.

Without the reflection part, (asking honestly “Is what I am doing working?”,  “How can I do better?” etc.) we can find ourselves on a treadmill going nowhere.

So go ahead – Reflect!

That’s right right, Larry; “Locked in your comfort zone.” “No guts, no glory.” It’s easy to take no chances. Many people are afraid to take the chance to transform themselves due to silly reasons like, “they won’t like me” or “I may look dumb.” Pretty sad. Thank Kathy for this one

Yes indeed – thank you again Kathy & Larry. I often ask when I see 25 years experience – do they have 25 years experience or 1 year of experience repeated 25 times…..

So true – When a leader becomes too comfortable, the business gets trapped on a Ferris wheel.
