Managers (and employees) need to know their leader is on their side and has their back. Here are two questions to ask your managers or subordinates –
“What are you working on now?”
“How can I help?”

I often ask my reports “what are you working on?” I’ve always been a little hesitant because it could be taken as lack of attention or effort- So I’m glad to have some validation for the question! It seems to me it’s an natural result of the philosophy of hiring good people, giving them authority and responsibility and saying “let’s go!” You’re not going to know what they’re doing all the time.
