Busy is ok – but doing what?
Recently my great friend asked me to a Yankees game. It was the fifth game of a playoff series with Cleveland and they had to win or their season would be over. I hadn't been to a game in years and the seats were right behind home plate, a little…
Wealth is not a zero sum game
Zero-sum means more for me means less for you. But if I make more money it doesn't mean there is less for anyone else, or that I have taken any money from anyone else, leaving them poorer. If you create something that produces value for others, you haven't made anyone's…
Action produces information.
Recently I wanted to reduce the waste stream coming from my company to be more efficient and environmentally friendly. I wasn't sure what exactly we could do. So I got up and went for a walk through just one of our warehouses, looked in dumpsters, and started asking questions of…

A bad culture needs rules
If you build a great culture with your team, where people trust and respect each other, are helpful, are led well, etc. then you don't need lots of rules and policies and policing. Great culture is far better than great rules.
Casting my little vote
It seems pretty crazy out there. But I still get up each day and try to be a good leader using time-tested principles and good character. The world needs good leaders. It needs me, and you. "In its brief 232 years of existence, there has been no incubator for unleashing…

The "Spread" – Encore!
For those subscribers who don't deal with numbers, you must be getting bored by now. My apologies. Usually my messages are short, but sometimes I do a lesson that is longer. Tomorrow it will be shorter...I promise. So in my first "Spread" message, I mentioned something about how much he…
The "Spread", part 3
Cash + Receivables - Payables = Spread If for some reason my accountant can't give me financials in time, I at least get the Spread numbers. They are super easy to get. Your Spread will vary perhaps quite wildly if you measure it each week. This is because many suppliers…
"Spread" part two – Chart it out
Cash + Receivables - Payables = Spread. Measure it regularly each month. Did it go up? Did it go down? Why? You have to be able to explain it. If you can't, you don't have a good handle on your business. Make a chart (your bookkeeper/accountant would love to do…

I was getting bummed reading this thinking you were going to regret going to the game. I was thinking, “He’s gotta have fun sometimes.” Then the rain delay! I thought you would describe your day as a total waste. It was refreshing by the end to hear that you enjoyed your trips and what you did to set yourself up for success. It was a timely message.
Wait, grown men can’t play baseball in the rain, despite 50,000 people traveling to watch them do so!?
Red Sox forever! They will always be a top priority for me.
I love this message Larry. Resonates with me a lot – when I think about “did I have a good day or a bad day” I find myself always going back to if I kept the promises to myself to do the high value things I told myself I’d get done that day. A good day = yes a “bad” day = no. but knowing that those priorities can still happen and I am in control of my own goals in the middle of “life happening” is a great motivator to keep going and get it done. (also go Yankees!)
