Good Leaders are Likable

Would you follow a jerk?

Likability is the gateway to connecting.  Successful business professionals are likable.  They are cheerful, polite, and demonstrate a positive confident attitude.  They feel good about themselves and believe they have the ability to solve client’s problems.  They care about others and smile at them.

Because of these likable qualities, people are open to their leadership and to helping them accomplish the goals of the group with their best efforts.   People connect with the likable leader and these connections lead to long-term positive and profitable relationships.

A leader is a student

A good leader knows that while they are charged with making the right calls in their organization, they have much to learn.

The leader who thinks they know it all, or is supposed to, will chase good people away, and be stuck in mediocrity trying to hold onto their position long after it’s obvious they are failing.

Leaders are learners – every day, from anyone.

Gamify it!

People like games.  If you can make games out of what you want your team to do, they will do better because they want to win.

But don’t make games nobody can win.  Games nobody (or few) can win, will have no players.  If they are forced to play, they will not like it and it will have the opposite effect you intended.

Perhaps create games a diverse team can win at different levels.

Create well-designed games for your team.

Make Winner's Mistakes

People who are growing and getting better are always making mistakes.  But not the same mistakes over and over, and not dumb easily avoidable mistakes.

They aren’t making mistakes of poor character, poor taste, and sloth very often.  They don’t make the same mistakes over and over.  And they look around and learn from others as much as possible so they don’t have to make the same mistakes. 

The mistakes winners make are learning mistakes.  They are trying new things.  Experimenting.  Putting new things into practice.  They are adjusting quickly to get it right.
