Some people are living far below their potential because they don’t believe in themselves.  All they need is someone to come along and tell them they believe in them.

Kindness is a good quality for a team to perceive in their leader.  Weakness is not.

Be kind to the people on your team, but be strong at the same time.

How to spread your time across the 80/20

If 80% of your people get 20% of the results, and 20% get 80% of the results, then how does a leader allocate his/her time?  

One good way is to give the 20% individual time and the 80% group time.  This way you are giving most of your attention to the top performers, and still giving time to communicate to everyone.

Who do you give individual time to?  The top 20%?

80/20 – the nuclear option

Ok, so what if you just fire the 80% who are the lowest performers so you are left with the 20%?  

You’ll be left with 20% of the team getting 80% of the results – still.  So that’s not a good option.

What is a good option is to get the most out of the 20% who are getting the most results.

The 80/20 Rule says that 80% of the business (work, sales, results) is done by 20% of your team.  

Is that true for you?

Do you spend 80% of your time trying “fix” the 80%?  That’s a mistake and misuse of your time.  Spend 80% of your time with the 20%, and 20% of your time with the 80%.

When your employees know that you care personally, they feel different about what they are doing at their jobs.  Imagine someone who felt that the boss didn’t care about them, their issues, the customers, the results, or any one of those?  Of course, they’d say “Then why should I?”

You know you care.  But do they?  How?

What drains you?

If you are “fighting” an issue everyday in your business, and the emotional energy required is draining you – just stop.  Take a step back, zoom out a bit, and observe.

Why are you fighting this battle?  Is it that you are afraid to fix it when you know you can?  Is it that you are protecting your ego so you don’t get hurt?  Is it that you are stubborn and won’t redefine what your business is and to whom?  Is it that you won’t get the right help?  Is it that you know it’s bad, but if you try to fix it you FEAR it will get worse?
