When I look back at my life and career, I can see that one curiosity, one meeting, one investigation, one project, leads to another interest, discovery, skill developed, and path.  

Try things. Keep an open mind and do something different. Learn all you can and meet people.  

One things leads to…a life of adventure.

What you don't see

When someone is really good at something, we tend to think they are just talented, or lucky to be naturally gifted. But follow them for 72 hours and watch their habits and how they spend their time voluntarily, and you’ll see the real reason they are excellent at something.

When we hire someone, we should try to understand how they spend their time, and what their habits are, and we’ll understand the real person who will show up on our team each day should we hire them.

Urgently different

If you do what everyone else does, you’ll be kinda like them. But if you want your business to stand out and get ahead, you have to do what others aren’t willing to do.

Decide, and do these things with great urgency.

You can get ahead of more talented competitors.

Getting Ready Backstage

You have a big presentation or speech. You have prepared; you think. It’s a big moment. They are all assembling out there. You are nervous. You want this to go well – it’s really important to you.  

What do you do? I’ll tell you what I do. I prepare well, sure. But the 5 minutes before, I don’t worry about the content. I get my head straight. I breathe, and remember I am lucky to be doing this. I remember why I am here – to help people. I give thanks.  

I know there is no such thing as a big audience – a large collective mind that somehow forms when 1000 people sit next to each other. No, it’s just this person. And it’s just the person sitting next to them. All individuals. I need to talk to singular people, and deliver my message to them, one at a time. I resolve to give it all to them, and do my best.

I smile, and breathe. Curtain rises. Be authentic.

Indecision

A life full of adventure is a life full of decisions. Will you get them all right? No. But making wrong decisions gives you the ability to make better ones.

Don’t see how many decisions you can get out of; see how many you can get into.  

That’s where the adventure is.

Neglect

Don’t neglect the important things you ought to do.

Conversations you need to have. Problems you need to address.  Facing things that must be faced.  Doing the most important things first.

It may be uncomfortable, and there may be easier things you could do first, but doing the most important things will allow you to make progress much faster.

Don’t neglect doing the things you ought to do – now.

People Matter

Don’t forget.

Talent, respect, communication, caring.

People matter.

Knowledge before wisdom

Don’t seek wealth. It will elude you.  

Instead seek knowledge. Then put that knowledge into action while seeking more knowledge.

You’ll get experience. Think about those experiences. Learn more and try more.

This becomes wisdom. As you build wisdom, wealth will seek you out.
