The Role of a Public Adjuster
I have had some major disasters in my life. When my barn burned down (photo above) in 2013, my friend Rick Searles recommended I call a public adjuster, and I am so glad he did. When a loss like a fire, flood, or storm damage happens, and you will have…
Choose short term suffering
"There are two types of suffering - short term and long term. You decide which one you want." -Dan Sullivan In long term suffering, you stop learning, stop innovating, and aren't good with people (your team). In short-term suffering, you learn every day, try things quickly, mess it…
Compelling Marketing
Your product or service will not be seen or discovered by people unless you MAKE it seen. Who is your target audience? What message will you make that is "hard-to-ignore"? How will you get your "hard-to-ignore" message in front of them often?
If it's right, stay the course.
Once you find a good business that suits you and you enjoy, stick with it. The most successful entrepreneurs are ones who have stuck with one trade for a long time, and they get really good at it. People who are always switching businesses never get really good at it…
Bring the best out of your people
"The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there." - John Buchan, 1875-1940 If a leader thinks he can change people, he is largely mistaken. The good news is we don't have to. What we must do is…
Produce more value than you consume
The way to make a profit, is for your business to produce more value than it consumes. You are buying labor, materials, and the services of other businesses, mixing them together, and hopefully coming out with something that others are willing to pay more than what it cost to you…
When selling is unethical
When you are selling something that is not in the best interest of the buyer, or that will make their life worse, selling is unethical. If you are selling something that will make their situation better, it's ethical. When I say "make their life better", this definition would include the…

Grateful for what didn't happen
In history, we most remember great figures who fought great battles. For example, Patton or FDR in World War II. What we don't remember is what did not happen and who avoided it. Do you recall World War III with the Russians? No, because Ronald Reagan avoided it, and saved…
Gratitude in Business

Great advice I’d like to add to. In most states, including CT, public adjusters can show up as your house is burning (they all have police scanners) and are permitted to solicit you at the scene. Be wise, do not sign right up during emotion. Use word of mouth for a good one.
Thank you Larry, I am thankful for you too!
I always used the insurance companies adjuster, I didn’t know choosing your own public adjuster was an option.Thank you for the advice!
Great advice! Thank you!
I have never heard of this service,”Public Adjuster” Thank you! I recently had a large claim of a basement flooding and taking out all of our heating and air systems. It took a lot of time and finally the insurance company just simply wore me out ! I just did not have the time any more to deal with it,(3 months) .I had my own company to run. This event has concreted my negative opinions of claims and how they are handled. If I could afford to, self Insure,I would.I had not had a claim in 10 years of any significant amount, Very disheartening.
Thank you for this option….
Thank you, Larry, THis blog has been great, and have sent many as thoughts for the day to my management team..
So true, Great advice.
Great advice Larry! I’ve used a public adjuster a number of times and I’m always well served by them. My wife and I spread this mantra whenever we have the opportunity and everyone we share it with always comes back and thank us profusely. This a great share. You’ll see from my email below I’m with GHP Media Inc now because Harty was a Covid-19 casualty. Despite my significant marketing skills I couldn’t turn it around and the Covid-19 shutdown sealed the coffin. I enjoy your daily messages and I appreciate the way you challenge your readers. It killed me to quit on the business but it became an untenable situation.
Blessings to you and yours,
George
Best advice I got wen I had a major claim. Thank God I did, he saved me so much grief and got more than I ever would have imaginned. Worth the money you pay them!
Interesting use of your blog today. I have extensive experience with all kinds of claims large and small. I recommend insured’s start with company adjusters along with their agent. If the dealings are difficult, claim very complicated and/or the adjuster non-responsive then contact a PA. PA’s, most times, create a contentious environment and can significantly delay settlements. I’ve seen claims that could have settled quickly for more than final agreement without the PA fee except for PA behavior during the process. With PA you can lose the insurance company goodwill and the vast majority of claims adjusters at insurance companies are very good and fair.
In my opinion your broad brush endorsement for PA’s is not in the best interest of your followers in most cases.
