Be better at keeping people
In a world where great people are the ultimate resource, you have to be better than your competition at keeping good people. Not everyone will stay forever, but they will all leave soon if it's not a good place to work and they have lots of better choices. How do…
Be better at recruiting
On your org chart, there may not be a department called "Recruiting", especially for a small business. There needs to be. You have to be better at recruiting than your competition. It's the ultimate competitive advantage. How are you doing on that?
Do you have people you don't trust?
If you keep people you don't trust because you think they can't be replaced...you are wrong. I used to think that. Don't keep people you don't trust.
Don't hire more people than you need.
Your biggest expense is likely payroll. Besides payroll, there are all kinds of other costs associated with any employee. Most of us need more people right now. But can you find ways to do more with less people? Keep things as simple as possible, but no simpler.
Ruthless Prioritizer
Leaders - By being a ruthless (in a good way) prioritizer, you only work on the MOST important thing to move your business forward toward your vision. There are many more things that you could be doing, but by always working on the most important thing, you avoid busywork. Busywork…
What is the number one priority now?
What is the number one thing that needs to be fixed or improved for your business to get better? That one thing that would have the biggest impact is what? ? What are you working on first thing and spending most of your time on today?
Saying NO is more productive than saying YES
You can do anything, but you can't do everything - not even close. When we say NO, we are saving lots of time to do the things we said YES to better.
Successful people focus
Really successful people focus. From a producer's (employee) point of view, they get really good at one thing. A leader is not a producer. They build teams that produce. Successful leaders focus on their business and how its parts work together and aren't scattered all over the place trying to…
Success does not bring happiness.
Success does not bring happiness. It takes happiness to bring success. Happy people attract others, and you need others to be successful. Are you happy? Can people tell? Do you spread it?
Protect your personal reputation
Be a giver, not taker. Don't be a jerk - not even for a short time. Don't gossip about others. Follow through; do what you said you would. Being honest even when it's not good. Develop an ability to make things happen and accomplish goals. Don't be an inauthentic poser.…

Hello Larry and all,
It is great to hire ‘good people’ but it is just as important to hire a round peg for a round hole. Some can adapt but many times the mis-cast is a path to failure and hard feelings then the process has to start again. So, make sure your recruiter is filling the roll intended and not just because they like the person.
Our strategy is to include one lead person from each of our business disciplines in our interview sessions. We have a large org so it usually consists of 4 round table interviews with 5 interviewers in each session. We then we finalize our thoughts in a roundtable with everyone giving their perspective. Is Interviewing easy? no. I believe it is the most complex thing we do in business. Understanding and Selecting and the right prospect in just a few hours of interviewing knowing this person could be with your team for years – Good or Bad is a very difficult thing to do.
Yeah Kathy!!!!!!!!
