To be more productive and make more progress faster, do less things.

By doing less things you can focus your energy and brainpower and limited time to do them better.

Of course, choosing the things to stop doing, and the ones to keep doing is the trick.

You wouldn’t take five hours to wash and wax your own car this weekend, because that is not going to help make your future better.

It’s the same for many of the things you do now when you show up in your business. 

If you are a person who doesn’t have the right high-value tasks left once you delegate or throw out the lower-value ones, then you need to start doing a thing or two that will really move the needle in your business.  Perhaps you’ve been a leader that is not doing the leader’s job.

Still, do less things, better.

What does this mean for you?

Big things first

We are tempted to do the small tasks first each day – especially if we use a to-do list; we get to check boxes and it makes us feel like we are getting things done.

But not all activities are of equal value.  The important things that will make a big difference to our future, which may often take more time, concentration, and focus are what will move the needle – and they need to be given priority.  They are also the things we like to procrastinate; maybe because we don’t do them all the time and they are out of our comfort zone.

Big things first.

What is your big thing today?

The KWINK question

“Knowing what I know now, would I do that again?”

It’s zero-based thinking.  Knowing what I know now, would I do it again?

Hire that person?

Get into that?

Get involved with these people?

Buy that?

Go there?

Start that?

If the answer is no, the next question is “How do I get out (stop), and how fast?”

Overworked and Stressed?

The time to stop is when you have a million things to do, can’t keep up, and have no time to stop.

This is not what you wanted when you started, right?  

Your health is not worth it right? (Right!)

It’s not what you are doing, it’s HOW you are doing it.  You have not adjusted your job to the current state of your business and you probably aren’t empowering (trusting, training, allowing) others to take parts of your job from you. 

Just stop, take a break, remember what’s important, and reset.  Gather up the lesson.  Redesign who you are and how you show up in it. 

Take care of you.

Then you can try again more intelligently.

Build Trust

Trust is a soft key attribute.  If you don’t have trust with your team, they fight you and your ideas.

Making and keeping promises builds trust.

Breaking promises destroys it.

Very successful people have the same amount of time as everyone else, and like others, are busy most all the time. It’s what they are doing when they are busy that makes the difference. 

Eighty percent of what you do has little to no value.

Restructure what you are thinking about and doing to focus on the 20%.
