Training – the spaces in between

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

“I trained them already” you say.  But do you think they remembered it all?  And even if they did, it’s time to train to all the spaces in between your training; there’s always a deeper level of understanding for your employees to get to.  And then there’s practice – just because they know what to do doesn’t mean they can do it, or that they’ve broken through their personal covert “That’s wierd I’m not doing that” inertia.

If you’re serious – training is never complete.

I used to do quite a bit of training on testing materials my company published. My favorite cartoon to open with was about “Zip,” the dog. The little boy said,” I taught [read:”trained”] Zip to shake his paw.”; “Shake, Zip.”; Zip does not respond; “I said I taught him, I didn’t say he learned it.”

Kind of says it all….
