“Silence Teaches”

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

Thanks to my friend Brian Hammac for this powerful saying.

“Silence Teaches”.

If things are going on that are not optimal, that do not meet high standards, that are wrong, and nobody says anything, then people learn that is REALLY the standard, regardless of what the slogans, sayings, or posters on the wall say.

What is going on that is not great that you, the leader, don’t say anything about?

Having been raised along with 9 siblings and having a number of children myself I can attest that this is 100% accurate even for young children. A child that is not called down and called out when doing something wrong will assume that they have permission and are in the right. I can literally remember using that excuse as a child, “Well, you didn’t say not to do it!” Children are always listening and watching for approval or disapproval. If we say nothing then it’s permission through omission. As adults we are no different.
