If you don’t deal with people who are erratic, can’t be trusted, or otherwise have bad character, you will save yourself a lot of surprises and trouble.
If the person is questionable or sketchy and the deal looks really good, it means it’s a bad deal in the end.
People who have good character are the ones you want to work with.

Larry, how did you learn this? (sarc) I am in the Commercial and Residential painting business, how do I remain in business and not deal with ‘dubious characters’?
Absolutely. It’s better to miss a job than do a job for a shady character.
In reading Walter Johnson’s comment above I have to admit that the way I learned this was the hard way. I used to think I could and wanted to work for anyone and everyone. After several bad experiences I finally made the decision that certain people aren’t worth working for and should be avoided. I believe what Walter might be asking though is how to identify people you shouldn’t work with or for? There are interview questions that can be asked that will give a good sense. Also asking about their previous experiences working with other people. Have a clear idea in your mind of what would be an ideal person to work with. Discuss those ideals with whoever you are considering working with/for and judge their reaction. It’s a process that gets better with practice. If your concern is there aren’t enough good people out there to work for then that’s something else altogether. I believe the good people are out there and that good people attract good people. Someone else might be right now waiting for someone like you to come along but aren’t sure how to find you. They may be getting by with someone who is not their ideal and keeping an eye open for someone better. Don’t assume because other contractors are busy that they are better than you. Go after it and convince the good people that you are the right person for them.
