To see the path, take the next step.

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

We often wait for a sense of absolute certainty before we take the first step, convinced that we need a map, a destination, and a clear view of every obstacle. But the truth is that clarity is a reward for action, not a requirement for it. From the standing position, the horizon remains fixed and distant. It’s only when you begin to move that you will see hidden turns and new views that were invisible from the starting line.

The fog only thins as you walk through it.

I can tell you I have started many projects, businesses, and adventures without knowing how to do it, what I would face, and what steps were necessary.  There was only one way to really find out.  Do it.  Go.  Get started.  Take the next step.

A few of my favorite things to talk about in my School of Entrepreneurship are –

“Action illuminates the next step”, and talking about driving at night.  You can only see as far as your headlights shine.  Not far, but enough to drive a bit.  Then you get to see more, and you can drive that bit.  When a turn shows up, you can take it.  When an obstacle appears, you can deal with it. You can take a long journey this way. Each step taken is necessary to get to the next.

Abstract fears you had at the start turn into actionable steps and tangible tasks. By the time the full route is revealed, you’ll realize that the “path” was simply the collection of steps you were brave enough to take.

What do you want? Where do you want to go?

Get started.

I like the “driving at night” metaphor – one step at a time! Good morning!

Brandon Carr

It’s interesting to compare this to The Road Less Stupid which talks about thinking rigorously before you act, thinking time is your superpower, and thinking beats reacting. But at a certain point, the thinking must end, and it’s time to take action.
