I have a measure of business success that doesn’t get talked about much.
“Do you have real friends at work?”
If you are the boss, do people really like you, or do they only smile when they see you because you are the boss?
It’s hard to tell sometimes, because people smile at you because you are the boss in any event. But the appearance of some bosses strikes fear in their employees.
Do they trust you? Do they respect you?
I know some business leaders (not many) who play the big shot, but their people do not like them for the things they have done and are doing and how they are doing them. I don’t want to be that guy.
“There is no enjoying anything valuable if one has no one to share with.” – Seneca
You can be successful and well-liked.
How about you?
When it comes to leadership, people won’t remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel.
Being successful and well-liked go hand-in-hand. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar so to speak.
One of my close family members was having trouble getting along with a certain other close family member years ago and I told him that the other person may or may not change and that he had no control over that. However, he could personally change and it would affect the situation in a positive way. I encouraged him to read “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. It worked. He now gets along great with the other person and can get along with anyone else he wants. Being liked is our choice and with some practice we can get good at it!
