Courage before confidence

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I did a speech for 1400 people last week.  The first time I spoke to large groups I was very nervous; maybe like I was going to pass out even.

I summoned courage and did it anyway.  This does not feel good before or as you are doing it.

While I am still “nervous” backstage before I come out, it is more “excited”.

Now I am confident.  The confidence comes from doing it before and from preparation.

Confidence feels good.

The same is true for anything we do that is new or out of our comfort zone.  We have to use courage as a substitute for confidence, until confidence slowly comes.

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.

My group was talking about how natural you looked while speaking to us. I was sitting there wondering how you must have felt your first time standing in front of a large group of people. As always, you did a great job at your work. We get a lot out of it. Also, thank you for spotlighting Devon and all the others that have made us what we are!

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to oneโ€™s courage. What a great statement and so true. I was invited to fly to Dallas back in 1996 for a job interview. They hired me and allowed me to work remotely. I spent my 30th birthday on an airplane flying to Dallas. I was nervous but courage took over. The job changed my life in a really big, and good way.
