Introverts are the majority

Larry Janesky: Think Daily

I am an introvert.  And I am not in the minority.  Studies show that introverts make up 50% – 57% of the population; being quiet is more common than you think.

In the book “Intorvert Power” by Dr. Laurie Helgoe, she says that introversion is strength, not deficiency.  I certainly never saw it a a weakness.  It’s an “inward energy economy that fuels creativity, insight, and intentional living.”

I love that explanation.  And I love intentional living.

Dr. Helgoe goes on to say “Solitude is fuel.  For introverts alone time isn’t loneliness – it’s the creative space that sustains depth, focus and clarity.”

This is certainly true for me. I am thinking about my introvert employees and their workspace/workplace and the ones who work from home.  Where would the introvert do their best work – in a noisy place near a busy hallway, or in a quiet place or working at home?  I know where I’d like to be…

More on introverts tomorrow….

I believe I’m an ambivert, skewering slightly to introversion.

“Solitude is fuel.” Amen. I appreciate and value solitude. In an increasingly hectic and distracting world, alone time (i.e. no-phone time) is critically important.

I am also an introvert. Most wouldn’t think that about me, but I definitely prefer to be by myself and doing my own thing uninterrupted. Even though there are people around at my home, you’ll find me nine out of ten times by myself outside working in my yard or in my shop moving at my own pace. I don’t tend to let other people’s priorities dictate my own now as much as I used to! As I age and adapt to physical change, I find the alone time more important these days.

Is it possible that there are really two types of people…”Introverts” and “Distracted”?! Just food for thought but how can anyone get much done if they are constantly interacting with the world around them? I know that the quiet people on the job seem to get more done while the others are chatting it up at every opportunity. The chatty people have to work really hard in between to make up for their down time.
