“If you are to persuade, appeal to incentives, not reason” – Ben Franklin
Incentive – it feels good now
Reason – It’s good for you
Incentive – it looks good to others
Reason – it is good for the long term
Incentive – you’ll get money
Reason – you’ll save money
Incentive – you get a free __________
Reason – it makes more sense
Incentive – it doesn’t cost you anything now
Reason – it costs less in the long term
Incentive – you’ll be more popular
Reason – you’ll make more sense
“Helping someone get what they want is easier than changing what they want.” – Seth Godin
What are you appealing to with your customers? Can you make an alternate offer to appeal to incentives?
I have seen many businesses fail to even start because they cannot find the balance between what they want to offer and what the market wants to buy.
This is excellent. I am a man of reason and so I usually try to use reason to persuade but that doesn’t always work. I always feel like I’m being manipulative when I give people incentives to buy rather than reason. The best way to think about this is if you can see the reason they need to buy it but you must give them incentive to do it then it’s a win-win. They buy it, they are happy, you are happy and after the incentive has worn off the reason for buying it will still remain.
