Know what kind of person you are looking for in the first place.
Interview them three times or more, in more than one environment.
Have your key team members interview them.
Do a background check.
In the end – it’s “Hell Yeah!” or no.

My boss interviewed a technician on a Saturday when we were closed, hired the guy, had him start a week later, nobody else got to interview or meet him until he started a week later. No background checks. The guy was an absolute train wreck of a coworker for the next 18 months. The damage he caused was unimaginable. So yes, absolutely 2-3 interviews. Let the people that have to work with the potential new hire weigh in. The worker bees are very good at detecting shortcomings of a candidate and red flags.
